The Collective Loxton
The Collective Loxton is a community-led retail initiative developed by the Loxton Chamber of Commerce in partnership with Loxton Community Futures Inc and supported by Regional Development Australia Murraylands and Riverland. It provides an affordable, shared retail space for micro and small businesses, particularly local artisans, while fostering collaboration, skills development and economic resilience.
Loxton faced the need to revitalise its main street, strengthen its local economy and create sustainable opportunities for small businesses without relying solely on government support. Many local artisans lacked access to affordable retail space, limiting their ability to grow and reach customers.
The Collective Loxton transformed a vacant shopfront into a collaborative retail space operated by a volunteer management team and participating artisans. The model enables multiple small businesses to share costs, reduce risk and access a physical storefront.
Key features include:
- Affordable, flexible retail opportunities for local makers
- A curated, high-quality retail experience showcasing local products
- A high school business residency program for young entrepreneurs
- Extended weekend trading to support tourism
- Reinvestment of profits into training, micro-grants and business development.
Since launching, The Collective Loxton has delivered strong economic and community outcomes:
- Supported over 40 local artisans with year-round sales opportunities
- Revitalised a vacant shopfront, boosting main street vibrancy
- Enabled business growth, with some participants expanding beyond the collective
- Increased tourism appeal through extended trading hours
- Created employment opportunities, including youth roles
- Built partnerships with local tourism and community organisations.
The initiative has also empowered women and individuals from farming backgrounds to diversify income streams during challenging economic conditions.
Beyond economic benefits, the Collective has strengthened community pride and connection. Local artisans gain visibility, young people develop entrepreneurial skills, and visitors engage with authentic, locally made products. The model fosters a strong sense of ownership and collaboration across the community.
The Collective Loxton continues to grow, recently expanding its footprint to include more artisans. Future priorities include:
- Expanding regional marketing and partnerships
- Enhancing visitor engagement
- Continuing to reinvest profits into business development
- Co-designing future opportunities with participating artisans
With its focus on collaboration, inclusivity, and local economic development, The Collective Loxton provides a scalable model for other regional communities.
