Plotting a Course for the Grampians – The Grampians 2025 and Beyond Forum

The Grampians 2025 and Beyond: A State of the Region Forum, led by the RDA Grampians Committee, was the first forum of its kind in the region. The event brought together over 130 regional leaders, including councillors and executives from all 11 Local Government Areas, Traditional Owner representatives, government executives, and industry stakeholders. Its purpose was to identify economic growth opportunities and foster a shared vision for prosperity across the Grampians.

With 60% of councillors newly elected, many leaders were engaging with regional data and priorities for the first time. The Grampians faces uneven growth, with some areas among Victoria’s fastest growing, while others are declining. Recent bushfires have added pressure on tourism, agriculture, and local businesses.

Despite being a regional economic powerhouse, labour productivity has declined, and community acceptance of land diversification and major projects remains a challenge. Strong, collaborative partnerships across government, industry, and communities are essential to turn these challenges into opportunities and drive inclusive, long-term regional growth.

The forum featured:

  • Expert-led panel discussions on the region’s key economic drivers: mineral sands mining, renewable energy, agriculture, and advanced manufacturing
  • Case studies and interactive sessions to encourage practical thinking around economic transitions, partnerships, and translating growth into tangible benefits for communities
  • Strategic insights and regional data designed to equip leaders with knowledge for informed, future-focused decision-making.

Outcomes from the Forum were:

  • Shared understanding and collaboration: Leaders gained a broader perspective beyond individual municipal boundaries, fostering regional collaboration
  • Priority sectors identified: Food and fibre processing, mineral sands development, renewable energy, and advanced manufacturing were highlighted as key growth areas
  • Strengthened regional leadership: Attendees expressed a strong commitment to acting collectively and sharing ideas to support long-term regional development.

The forum reinforced the Grampians’ potential as a major player in renewable energy, advanced manufacturing, critical minerals and value-added agriculture. It strengthened connections between leaders and helped generate a clear understanding of the projects needed to drive economic growth across the region.

Insights from the forum have shaped LGA Council Plans and the RDA Grampians’ 2025/26 business plan, ensuring ongoing support for coordinated, strategic, and connected economic development initiatives.
