Regional Development Australia Murray (RDA Murray) is working with the Australian Red Cross, Rural Australians for Refugees and other stakeholders to encourage refugees to move to regional Australia.

RDA Murray Chief Executive Gary Saliba said that the plan was to develop a model that could be replicated around the country, solving skills shortages and providing a better quality of life—for refugees and for regions.

“We require a sustainable population for a sustainable region,” he said.

Dr Saliba said that the Murray region had a shortage of labour, but a high demand in a variety of sectors.

“A lot of refugees come from a regional area.  We have an opportunity to solve some challenges by investing in refugees … it's a win-win.”

Dr Saliba said that not-for-profits, for profits, government agencies and businesses could solve problems by working together.  Stakeholders will soon be putting a proposal to the Australian government.
