Queensland Senators Claire Moore and Mark Furner have toured Moreton Bay’s Russell and Macleay Islands at the request of Redland City Mayor Melba Hobson, a visit which aimed to highlight the case for infrastructure projects.
RDA Logan and Redlands (Queensland) Acting Chair Gail Ker, and Redland City Councillors Frank Pearce and Barbara Townsend also joined the December 2011 tour, which included inspections of roads, jetties and ferry terminals, and the site of a proposed sporting complex.
Mayor Hobson said the bay islands have significant infrastructure and other community needs which cannot be met by the ratepayers alone.
“This visit was designed to raise awareness at the federal level and open the way for dialogue about a coordinated approach,” Mayor Hobson said.
Senator Moore said she would help Redland City Council lobby the Australian Government for island infrastructure funding, and also signalled a key role for RDA Logan and Redlands in bringing together all levels of government to help develop the region.
